Living Fences

Harmony Hill Nursery has devoted time, resources, and our expertise to creating stunning living fences ready to install. Living Fences are an alternative to traditional panel, wood, and chain-link fences. Their features reduce sound and sight all while bringing elegance to any landscape. Unlike traditional fencing, living fences provide ecosystem benefits inviting countless lost species back to your home and regulating storm-water run off.

European Hornbeam

Carpinus betulus

European Hornbeam hedges have been used for hundreds of years in formal gardens around the world. They originated in Europe to create boundaries while being aesthetically pleasing to the eyes. Their deep green, ovate leaves turn to a light copper in the fall and hold on to the plant until the early spring when new buds break. This gives year round coverage from nosey neighbors and busy streets. Unlike other hedging material, they can reach a height of 60 feet and tolerate a large variety of soil and water conditions. Harmony Hill provides this plant material between 6 and 10 feet pruned into 3 foot cylinders.

Interior and lower limbs do not naturally shed like other large, evergreen trees creating a natural barrier from top to bottom for the entire life of the tree. We prune our Green Giants three times a year to provide optimal shape and structure. Out stock ranges from 6 feet to 12 feet in height.
